Are Tinted Number Plates Legal in the UK?

There are strict criteria that number plates should meet on each of their characteristics. One of which is the reflective levels of the plates. The darkened acrylic of a tinted number plates affects the display of the reflective material which would make it impossible for it to pass the required UK number plates tests.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) standards regard the number plates as blocking the registrations.  The theory of the DVLA is that the dark background makes the numbers and letters difficult for an easy display to the police and the ordinary citizens, which is against the law.

A tinted standard two-dimensional number plate can obscure which would render it illegal while a tinted number plate with the 3D or 4D style would be easy to read and legal.  Tinted 3D and 4D number plates are permitted in the UK if they meet all the other regulations laid down by the DVLA. Classic cars are, however, legally allowed to use silver letters on black plates.

A 3D or 4D number plate is made by attaching gel-resin characters to the background of the plate while the index marks would be raised from off the number plate. When the 3D or 4D number plate is darkened with a tint, it is the plate underneath that would be tinted. The tinting on the number plate won’t make it impossible to read the registrations, which is not against the law.
